Windows utilities for testing workstation disk performance?

I would like to test a few of my workstations hard drive performance and would like to know what are some good utilities for this task. They aren't database, nor file servers so I don't need anything "enterprisey".

It seems like a couple workstations have much slower disk performance and I want to measure it to confirm my "feeling".

Oops, I should have added that I need utilities for Windows.

  • Use bonnie++ under Linux for testing the file system performance. This package also contains zcav to benchmark raw disk performance.

Under Windows I've used HD Tune once.

Scott Muc : HD Tune is really nice. Thanks!
  • IOMeter is a free and open source utility for measuring disk performance. I have used it previously and it works pretty well for basic disk information. It's available for Windows, Linux and Netware.

The Performance counters built into Windows can also be used to monitor the performance of a lot of objects, including disks. You'll want to look at the Physical Disk Performance Object.

HDTach is another product I have seen recommended, but have not tried myself as yet.

Scott Muc : Really like HDTach, thanks!

  • I recommend Sandra as it allows you to compare the performance to other systems with similar setups.

  • I've used Passmark PerformanceTest. Probably not as detailed as IOMeter (and not free) but very easy to use and compare your results with others. It reminds me of 3DMark.
